Phoenix Court Community Kitchen Upgrade Funded by Nationwide

A communal kitchen in Birmingham has benefitted from Nationwide Windows & Doors’ Social Value Fund, creating a safer environment that can be used to bring local residents together over food.

Phoenix Court, which is managed by The Pioneer Group, offers sheltered accommodation to older people and people with additional needs to help them live independently. As well as their own personal flats, all residents have access to a communal kitchen, lounge and garden.

Residents had requested an upgrade to the communal kitchen with a view to joining together to organise more activities and events for everyone to enjoy. The existing kitchen had been neglected – equipment was old and didn’t meet required safety standards, so it wasn’t plausible for residents to use it for their activity plans.

Now, it’s a different story! The communal kitchen at Phoenix Court has had new flooring fitted throughout, creating a cleaner and safer environment. A new, range-style cooker has also been installed, which is big enough to be used for large community lunches and to help residents cater for activities and events where they can prepare and share food and refreshments together.

Laura Griggs, Community Hub Manager at The Pioneer Group said: “Enhancing the facilities at Phoenix Court has helped to create an even more welcoming and relaxed environment that encourages social interaction, strengthens community connections and supports shared meals and company between our residents.”
